The Favourite (15)
England is at war with the French. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots. As Sarah’s time becomes more occupied with the ongoing war Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion unleashing rivalries, betrayals and treachery at Court.
Olivia Colman’s performance as Queen Anne garnered almost Best Actress award during this year’s awards season but Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz turn in equally extraordinary performances. We love Yorgos Lanthimos here at New Dot and this bawdy, glorious, superbly staged and acted film is his best yet.

And the critics say…
“Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman – it’s fun just to think of them in the same thought, let alone on the same screen.” Ty Burr, Boston Globe
“Bathed in a score of Vivaldi, Bach, and Purcell, it’s Lanthimos’s most watchable movie to date, and also his best. The Favourite is a triumph in textures, a beam of light through a window.” Josphine Livingstone, The New Republic
“Lanthimos’ renegade deviltry turns a period piece into a bawdy, brilliant triumph. Expect Oscar to bow down to Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and the mighty Olivia Colman as Queen Anne for bringing a #MeToo punch to 18th-century British politics.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
“A wicked delight.” David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
