And the critics say…
“Flitting between a mythical past and a down-to-earth present, the story is full of scary monsters – from fantastical demons to all-too-real landmines and brutal beatings. Yet The Breadwinner looks through the eyes of a resilient young girl whose courage is our guide.”
Mark Kermode, The Guardian
“The Breadwinner’s” compelling and sympathetic portrayal of Afghans and their struggles is welcome, presenting a chance for viewers to identify with the plight of citizens of a country whose fate has been so greatly shaped by our own.” Vanessa H. Larson, Washington Post
“A rare animated film without a shred of sentimentality but bucket-loads of heart and soul.” Ian Freer, Empire
“Parvana’s eloquent eyes convey the tragedy of a land under siege, and the terrible fate which befalls each family member in turn is beautifully animated.” Wendy Ide, Screen International
