Lady Bird

Lady Bird (15)

One of the most talked about —and one of our most antipicated— films of the year.  Unconventional and rebellious  teenager Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is desperate to start a new, more exciting life far away from her strict Catholic high school, her financially-strapped family and her abrasive but loving mother. The volatile relationship between mother and daughter lies at the heart of director Greta Gerwig’s  debut. Thanks to brilliant acting from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf this semi-autobiographical comedy-drama avoids sentimental cliches in favour of fully-rounded characters.

And the critics say…

“Gerwig’s pink-haired protagonist is seemingly unencumbered by the awkwardness and fear that dogs most teenagers on the cusp of change. This cusp-ness is where the film’s magic resides; its joyful, forward-rushing narrative rhythm captures the feeling of adolescence ending before it has barely begun.” Simran Hans, The Observer

Lady Bird is an absolute sunrise of a movie, the kind of thing that makes your heart leap and gives you hope, brings you as much joy as your best friend’s wedding, and makes people like me write over elaborate opening sentences to praise it.” Jonathan Dean, GQ

“Thoughtful and generous, it’s that rare ensemble film that gives its side characters enough room to breathe and grow.” Tomris Laffly, Time Out

Lady Bird is something truly special: a coming-of-age comedy so funny, perceptive, and truthful that it makes most other films about adolescence look like little more than lessons in cliché.” A.A. Dowd,  The A.V Club
